Split Wizard

The Blend Split dialog is used to divide one layer into multiple layers based on the data values. Within the column you select, features representing each distinct value will be split into their own file and added to your map as a separate layer.

This dialog consists of 4 steps:

  • Step 1 - Choose the Layer to Split
  • Step 2 - Select Data Column
  • Step 3 - Pick which Values to Export
  • Step 4 - Save the Results

Video Overview

Step 1 - Choose the Layer to Split

Step 1 of the Split Wizard allows users to select which layer to split. The Layer to Split select box displays all layers available in the current project. After selecting a layer, the user can then press the Next button.

If your layer has certain features that have been selected on the Select Features tab, you may also check the Only split the currently selected features on this layer checkbox.

Step 2 - Select Data Column

Step 2 of the Split Wizard allows users select the Data Column to Split From. Each distinct value found in the selected column will be split into a separate output file. There is also a View Data button on this step to allow users to view the layer data to determine the best column to split on.

Step 3 - Pick which Values to Export

Step 3 of the Split Wizard allows users to select the values that you want split and exported into separate files. You may also specify the output filename for each value the will be exported. The default values in this dialog are automatically generated by the wizard. Users are shown a row for each unique Column Value and are also shown the Feature Count of features that match the value. Users also have a text field to set the Output Filename and an Export checkbox that allows them to specify whether or not to export the value to a new file.

There is also an optional Overwrite if output files exist checkbox that can be checked if you want to replace files that are present from past operations.

Step 4 - Save the Results

Like other Tools wizards, this step allows users to choose how they want the wizard results to be saved. Users can choose to Add to Map and specify the desired layer name, or choose to Output to File. If Output to File is chosen, the user must select an existing or new file to save the results into.
