The Legend Editor, located in the Adornments Tab, allows the user to create and place a map legend in their map or project. Once a legend is placed on the map, it is in a fixed position, regardless of panning, and will automatically be carried over to the Print Map.
To get to the Legend Editor, click on the Legends button and the Manage Legends window will appear. Here, we can add new legends or edit and delete existing legends. Add New will take you to the Legend Editor with a blank legend for you to create.
Legend Settings
Name - The name of the legend that the GIS Editor references to.
Location - Sets where the legend appears on the map and can be offset using the Left and Top fields.
Size - Sets the width and height of the Legend and can be set to automatically scale the Legend appropriately.
Minimum Size - Allows you to set the smallest size you would like for the legend to appear.
Background Style - Sets the background of the title. Clicking the Configure… button will take you to the Area Style builder and can be customized there.
Symbol Size Model - Set the height and width of the symbols on the legend. By default, this is set to their original size.
Legend Items
This section allows you to add items to your legend, either by importing existing elements from your map or by creating a new item from scratch. Selecting an item in the list will allow you to Edit, Duplicate, and Delete the item. You can also set the item as a header or footer to your legend.
The Import from Map button will list all elements and styles in the map you wish to import from. Checking the box next to one or more styles will add it to your Legend with the style's symbol. If you do not wish to use something from the map, you can create a new legend item from scratch using Add new. This will bring up the Legend Item Editor window.
Legend Item Editor
The Legend Item Editor allows you to create new and edit existing items in your legend. The editor is made of four major sections: Symbol, Item Bounding Box, Label, and Preview.
Symbol sets up the icon that appears next to the label for your legend icon.
Item Bounding Box sets up an Area Style to be used as the bounding box for the item.
Label sets the label that will be used to describe what a symbol means for the map.
Preview displays what the item will look like in the Legend.
