Image Raster Files are most commonly .gif, .jpg, .png, and .bmp file types and they can be added directly onto your map. If an Image Raster File is not Geo-referenced, the GIS Editor has the ability to reference a raster image file that isn't Geo-referenced and place it on a location in your map.

Using the Add Layers drop down menu located on the ribbon bar, select “Image Raster Files” and a windows explorer window will open up for you to browse to and select your image that you wish to add. Once we have it selected and click open, and the image will be added to a new layer in our layer group and placed on the map based on the Spatial Reference Information.

Some images may not have Spatial Reference Information set up prior to adding the image to the GIS Editor. We can manually add that information using the Editor when we load up our Image Raster File.

Before we begin selecting our image, we first need to find out where we want to put our image. The way we do that is by finding the X, Y coordinates for both the upper left and lower right corners of where we would like to place our image. Place your mouse on the first corner and look at the coordinates on the lower left hand side of your screen, then we do the same for the lower right hand side and take note of it.

Now we are ready to add our file. Using the Add Layers drop down menu located on the ribbon bar, select “Image Raster Files” and a windows explorer window will open up for you to browse to and select your image that you wish to add. Once we have it selected and click open, a dialog box will appear to set the spatial reference information. Here we input our upper left X, Y coordinates and our lower right X, Y coordinates, the image width and height is already calculated for you. Now that we are done, our image will be displayed in your project under a new layer.
