A Delimited File, usually .csv or .txt, contains information that is separated by a common character, such as a comma or pipe character. In order to load a delimited file properly to the map, the file needs to have a longitude and latitude column in order for the features to be placed on the map. Once you have selected your file, a new layer will be created in the Layer List.
When you first open a delimited file in the GIS Editor, a configure file window will open. Here, you set up how your file is formatted by defining the delimiter character and the Longitude(X) and Latitude(Y) columns so that the editor can read the file properly and place features on the map.
Delimiter - The delimiter for a delimited file defines how the file is structured. The common types of delimiters are comma(,), pipe(|), and tab. Other delimiters exist, and if that's the case with your file, the select the “custom” option and enter your delimited character on the right.
Mapping Type - Defines the coordinate information the file contains. The longitude(X) and Latitude(Y) columns option takes a column of information to be read as the position the feature will exist on the map. If your file has Longitude and Latitude columns, the GIS Editor will automatically assign those columns to read for map positioning. The Well-Known Text(WKT) columns option will look at a single column that defines the shape and location of each feature. The editor will know where to place the features based on that information given.
Below the configuration file options, there is a preview panel that displays the delimited file by separating the columns and rows based on the delimiter. Make sure that your file is being read correctly prior to adding the file to your map. There are additional preview options that let you see different pages of information on the bottom of the window. By clicking the '>' and '»' buttons, the file will display more information. Once the file is configured properly, “Save & Add” will add the file into your map.
